School Administration

Mr. Kyle Griffith, Principal

My name is Kyle Griffith, and I am the proud principal of Shirakawa School. Shirakawa is such a great community to be a part of because our staff, students, and parents work together as one big family, with students’ academic success as our #1 priority.

I greatly enjoy my role at Shirakawa School for many reasons:

First, and foremost, our staff is committed to keeping student achievement strong. Our custodians, secretaries, cafeteria staff, yard duty supervisors, and instructional assistants all help create a warm, safe, welcome, and clean environment for our students to learn.

Our teachers work long hours and continually partner together to examine student data, and put best-practices into place so that all students are challenged and see growth. They are a passionate, energetic, and wonderfully positive group of people to work with. I could not ask for a more amazing staff.

Secondly, I greatly enjoy the positive characteristics that our students embody. Our mascot is the Sharks, and we have developed an acronym that embodies what we want each student to strive for, K through 8th.

  1. Safe
  2. Helpful
  3. A Problem Solver
  4. Respectful & Responsible
  5. Knowledgeable

Lastly, I enjoy my role at Shirakawa because of the diversity and strong community support that we have here. We have students from several cultural backgrounds and languages, which is a real benefit to our students. Our students, I believe, will become better adults, because they have so many friends from interesting and diverse cultures. And, every day, you’ll find dozens of parents, helping out in our classrooms, which really supports the important learning that goes on here. We have a wonderful community!

A little about me:

I live with my family in Aptos, Santa Cruz County. When I’m not at school, I enjoy running the Redwood forests with my wife and dog, surfing with my son, and watching my daughter perform in ballet. We are an active family, and we greatly value education and the “growth mindset” for all four of us.

Our favorite vacation spot is Yosemite. We meet up with extended family in the winter, and we love hiking, biking, and swimming the rivers in summer.

I have been in education for 21 years. I taught elementary school and middle school for 11 years, and I have served as an administrator for 10. I have also coached middle and high school soccer, track, and softball. I loved being a teacher and coach, and I thoroughly enjoy, and take seriously, my role as principal. Partnering with families and teachers to make a positive impact in students’ lives is my passion.

Thank you for reading, and please feel free to stop by our front office if you should ever have any questions or need anything at all. We are here for you and your children.

Go Shirakawa Sharks!

Sincerely,

Kyle Griffith, Principal - Shirakawa School

Yvonne Sugimura, Assistant Principal

Dear George Shirakawa Sr. School Families,

My name is Yvonne Sugimura and I am honored to continue as the Assistant Principal of George Shirakawa Sr. School. Before beginning my career as the AP at George Shirakawa Sr. School, I had the pleasure of working in the classroom as a third grade teacher with the Shirakawa community.

During my 11 years in education, I have taught first, third, and seventh grade. Growing up, I attended J.W. Fair Middle School, now known as Bridges Academy, in the Franklin-McKinley School District. After completing high school, I joined the Trojan Family at the University of Southern California earning my B.S. in Public Policy and Management. I completed my credential program at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and recently earned my M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction at San Jose State University. I am thrilled to continue my journey as part of the George Shirakawa Sr. School community and staff as an Administrator in Franklin-McKinley School District.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring and traveling the world with my husband and daughter.

Please feel free to contact me anytime at Yvonne.Sugimura@fmsd.org or 408.938.3249.
